FOTO FRIDAY: SULTAN ABDUL SAMAD BUILDING, KUALA LUMPUR
Every Friday I’ll be sharing a photo from someplace in my travels.
This week’s photo is of Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur.
Paying a special visit to this building was never in my plans, but since first discovering it, I found myself visiting again at different times of day. In search for Merdeka Square, I passed a lot of interesting architecture, from many different cultures, but none struck me as much as the Sultan Abdul Samad Building.
This building is massive, spanning a whole blocks length, so it’s hard to miss it. Designed in the late 1800s, when Kuala Lumpur was still under British administration, this building was originally meant to house government offices, including the Federal Court and High Court. While these courts have since moved out, the building is now occupied by the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture of Malaysia– which is why they have added the official 1Malaysia sign, which is the number “1” made from the Malaysian flag.
For me, I really don’t care too much on what’s actually inside the building. It’s the Mughal architecture that I find stunning. With a wide array of geometric shapes, bright copper domes, and tall clock tower, it’s a wonderful landmark downtown KL that I’m glad I ended up visiting!
